Each time I read a Murakami book, I wonder if surrealism is an escapism mechanism. Imagine if you have a so-so life and are given a chance to apply wishful thinking to it. The outcome would be ‘surreal’.
At the same time, it allows you to expand your horizons. You are no longer bound by the reality and logic of this world. Your thoughts, ideas can take any form, any direction. The possibilities are limitless.
If a fish and a bird fall in love, where do they build their nest?
